I worked for the same NHS organisation from September 1995 – October 2014. These organisations were renamed or taken over during this period and my roles were continued via TUPE arrangements.
Initially, the department was an integrated Children's and Adult's service. Later, Adults' Services and Children and young people's services were split.

I was team lead for the award-wining Children's Speech and Language Therapy Service and later service manager in a job share with Alison Drake.

The service included:
  • Community clinic service
  • Special Schools
  • Language Unit
  • Early Years Team
Clinics covered the townships of Rochdale, Sudden, Heywood, Middleton and Littleborough, with 11 sites overall.

  • Baillie Street Health Centre, Penn Street, Rochdale, OL16 1XS
  • Kirkholt Clinic, The Strand, Rochdale, OL11 2JG
  • Sudden Resource Centre, Silk Street, Rochdale, OL11 3EU
  • Ings Lane Clinic, Phoenix street, Rochdale, OL12 7DW
  • Milnrow Health Centre, Stonefield Street, Rochdale, OL16 4HZ
  • Littleborough Health Centre, Featherstall Road, Littleborough, OL15 8HF
  • Langley Clinic, Borrowdale Road, Langley, Middleton, M24 3QG
  • Durnford Street Clinic, Middleton, M24 5UD
  • Darnhill Clinic, Argyle Parade, Darnhill, Heywood, OL10 3RY
  • Taylor Street Clinic, Heywood, OL10 1EF
  • Whitworth Clinic, Brennan Crescent, Whitworth, OL12 8BB

Later, Baillie Street Health Centre was replaced by the Croft Shifa Health Centre (Opened 26th March 2010). Nye Bevan House also provided services on Maclure Road, Rochdale, opposite the train station.

Roles prior to Speech and Language Therapy

September 1989-1992 (and summers of 1993 and 1994)
Laboratory Technician
Ecology Department, The
Clayton Aniline Company / Ciba Clayton, Manchester.
This historic dyestuff factory employed me to ride around the site on an old butcher's bike and collect samples of 'grime' (captured by spraying large filter papers with glycerol) and liquid effluent from the dyestuff manufacturing process. I carried fuming sulphuric acid around in a leaky bottle for the procedure! I also used an automated Carbon Oxygen Demand machine, We also regularly visited the
Davyhulme Sewage Works to collect 'activated sludge' to test the biodegradability (Biological Oxygen Demand, or BOD) of the manufacturing effluent. An early insight into the ecological impact of dyestuffs used in fabrics and writable Compact Discs (CD-Rs). I also learnt how to use a PC and program in BASIC, as well as spreadsheets and DisplayWrite 4, an early word processor.

Bar man
The Athenaeum, York Street, Manchester, M2 2AW
Formerly the Paris Bank Building designed by Charles Heathcote (1902) - Edwardian Baroque.
Friday, Saturday and some Sunday evenings.
Briefly an essential part of the pre-club night scene (especially Flesh at the Hacienda), managed by Mike Pollard ("Polly").
I often scooped 'top take' at the bar, which is surprising as we had to add up the orders in our heads!
