I was team lead for the award-wining Children's Speech and Language Therapy Service and later service manager in a job share with Alison Drake.

Roles prior to Speech and Language Therapy
September 1989-1992 (and summers of 1993 and 1994)
Laboratory Technician
Ecology Department, The Clayton Aniline Company / Ciba Clayton, Manchester.
This historic dyestuff factory employed me to ride around the site on an old butcher's bike and collect samples of 'grime' (captured by spraying large filter papers with glycerol) and liquid effluent from the dyestuff manufacturing process. I carried fuming sulphuric acid around in a leaky bottle for the procedure! I also used an automated Carbon Oxygen Demand machine, We also regularly visited the Davyhulme Sewage Works to collect 'activated sludge' to test the biodegradability (Biological Oxygen Demand, or BOD) of the manufacturing effluent. An early insight into the ecological impact of dyestuffs used in fabrics and writable Compact Discs (CD-Rs). I also learnt how to use a PC and program in BASIC, as well as spreadsheets and DisplayWrite 4, an early word processor.
1993-1995(?)
Bar man
The Athenaeum, York Street, Manchester, M2 2AW
Formerly the Paris Bank Building designed by Charles Heathcote (1902) - Edwardian Baroque.
Friday, Saturday and some Sunday evenings.
Briefly an essential part of the pre-club night scene (especially Flesh at the Hacienda), managed by Mike Pollard ("Polly").
I often scooped 'top take' at the bar, which is surprising as we had to add up the orders in our heads!
